White Havanese puppy dog in a work office setting

F.A.Q.

Here are some questions that we often get about the Havanese breed and about our dogs in general.

CAN WE COME VISIT YOUR HAVANESE?

We would love for you to come visit our Havanese. You are purchasing a companion to live with for 15 yrs. or so. We feel that it is very important to take your time and do your research to a make sure that you are getting exactly what you want. We encourage people to visit the dogs when possible before purchasing so that they can get to know their temperments. Just because a dog is a Havanese doesn’t mean that it is going to have a good Havanese temperment. We have seen and have heard about Havanese that do not have good temperments.

WHAT THINGS WILL I NEED TO BUY BEFORE MY PUPPY ARRIVES?

We have written an article on what you will need with lots of good information and helpful links.  You can read it by clicking here.

WHAT HOUSE TRAINING DO YOUR PUPPIES HAVE?

We place a dog litter box in the puppy play pen with our puppies when they are young and they learn to use it pretty well. We have had good success using wee-wee pads in the house when they are running around loose. We do not take them outside before they leave, other than for a trip to the vet to be checked before they go, because we want to protect them from the possibility of being exposed to any diseases that could be outside. We want to make sure they are as healthy as they can be when they leave here.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

A MALE AND FEMALE TEMPERMENT?

There really is no difference between the temperment of a male and female to speak of, however, we have noticed that the males can tend to be just a little bit more loving and snuggly. It really just depends on the individual dog. If someone doesn’t have a preference and ask my opinion, I will usually recommend a male.

HOW BIG ARE YOUR HAVANESE?

Our puppies should grow up to weigh between 7-14 pounds.

HOW OLD DO THEY GET?

Havanese life expectancy is around 14-15 years

AT WHAT AGE CAN THE PUPPIES LEAVE?

The earliest we ever let any puppy leave would be 8 weeks. Smaller puppies we hold for 9 – 10 weeks.

CAN MY HAVANESE EAT “PEOPLE FOOD?”

Absolutely not! Havanese have very sensitive stomachs and eating food that they are not accustomed to can cause vomiting and diarreah. If you want to change dog foods do not make an abrupt change. Mix what your dog is on now about half-and-half with the new food and gradually wean him/her onto the new food.

WILL YOU SHIP A PUPPY?

We would prefer that you drive here and pick up the puppy or that you fly here and fly the puppy on board with you. We feel it is best for the puppy this way. However, we realize that it is not always possible to pick the puppy up in person. If no other arrangements can be made we will consider shipping the puppy under certain conditions.

When you ship a puppy it has to fly cargo so we will only ship under certain weather conditions and it must be a direct flight. You would have to pay for the airline, crate, and flight certificate from the vet. To get airline rates you will need to call the different airlines that fly into your area and find out the rates from Charlotte.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY DOG MICROCHIPPED?

Microchipping is the most successful method to keep track of a lost or stolen dog. A microchip is injected under the skin on the back of the dog’s neck in the same way that they receive a vaccination. Veterinarians and animal shelters keep scanners that read the digital number on the microchip. If your dog is picked up and scanned they in turn contact the microchip company that has your information and gets in touch with you to let you know where your beloved pet is located. Many animals have been reunited with their owners thanks to a microchip.

Any veterinarian can microchip your puppy or if you wish we can microchip your puppy for you and have everything ready for you when you pick him/her up for $35.

DO YOU HAVE YOUR PUPPIES’ DEWCLAWS REMOVED?

The short answer is “No.”  Some Havanese breeders will have their puppies’ dewclaws removed as part of their standard health procedure. New research shows that this practice may actually cause long term health problems such as joint laxity and arthritis.
